Whether you’re stepping onto a stage or logging into a Zoom room, the minutes before a presentation can feel electric, or for some…overwhelming.
The difference? Preparation.
Great speakers don’t rely on luck or last-minute inspiration. They follow a system, a few intentional steps that ground them, center them, and set them up to deliver with clarity and confidence.
Here are five things you should always do before you speak:
1. Practice Your Opening and Closing
The first and last thing you say will stick the most.
Your opening sets the tone. Your closing leaves the impact.
Rehearse both until they feel natural, these are the moments that shape your audience’s takeaway.
2. Know Your Audience
Who’s in the room (or on the screen)?
Tailor your tone, language, and examples to the people you’re speaking to.
A little research goes a long way in building connection and credibility.
3. Test the Tech
Mic. Slides. Internet. Background. Lighting.
If something can go wrong, it just might. Give yourself the gift of a tech check well before go-time. Peace of mind = stronger presence.
4. Breathe Intentionally
Nerves are normal. But deep, slow breathing calms the body and sharpens the mind.
Before you begin, pause. Inhale deeply. Exhale slowly.
Ground yourself in the moment, you’ll show up more centered and present.
5. Keep Water Close
Dry mouth is the hidden saboteur of many great talks.
Have a glass or bottle of water nearby. Take a small sip before you begin, and don’t be afraid to pause if needed.
Strong presentations don’t start when you open your mouth.
They start before you ever take the stage.
Take these five steps seriously, and you’ll step into every speaking moment with calm, clarity, and confidence.
