Many of my speaker friends say, “Great speakers don’t just inform, they transform.”
That line has stayed with me throughout my career, because it captures the true essence of impactful communication. Speaking is about shifting energy in the room. It’s about stirring hearts, changing minds, and inspiring action.
When we step on stage, whether it’s at a global conference or a small team meeting, we’re given a moment. And what we do with that moment can leave people simply more informed… or profoundly moved.
The Difference Between Informing and Transforming
Informing is about content. It’s data, bullet points, timelines, and takeaways.
Transforming is about connection. It’s about how the audience feels when they leave the room.
Here’s the key difference:
- Informing tells people what is.
- Transforming helps people see what could be.
A speaker who informs may be respected. A speaker who transforms is remembered.
Elements of Transformative Speaking
So how do you shift from informative to transformative? It’s not about being dramatic or theatrical. It’s about being intentional. Here are a few core techniques:
1. Storytelling
Stories anchor ideas in human experience. They bring facts to life. A personal anecdote, a client journey, a powerful moment from your past, these create connection. They make your message real.
2. Emotional Connection
People may forget your slides, but they won’t forget how you made them feel.
Speak with heart. Let your audience feel seen. Vulnerability, humour, and empathy go a long way in building trust.
3. Vivid, Inclusive Language
Use words that paint pictures. Instead of saying “we improved operations,” say “we removed roadblocks that were draining our team’s energy.” And always use language that invites: “we,” “together,” “you and I.”
4. A Clear Call to Action
Transformation isn’t just emotional, it’s actionable. Ask yourself: What do I want my audience to do differently after this? Then tell them. Directly and with intention.
Real Examples, Real Impact
Have you ever heard a speaker who shifted something inside of you?
Maybe it was the keynote who shared their journey of resilience, reminding you of your own strength? Or the leader who reframed a challenge as an opportunity, and made you want to step up? Or the advocate who gave voice to something you’ve felt for years but never put into words?
That’s the power of a transformative speaker. They don’t just pass along knowledge. They leave behind a spark.
Final Thoughts
If you’re preparing for your next presentation, challenge yourself to go deeper than the facts.
Ask:
🔹 What emotion do I want to create?
🔹 What shift am I hoping to inspire?
🔹 How can I move this room, not just speak to it?
Because your voice is more powerful than you think.
Use it not just to inform… but to transform.
