Let’s be honest, public speaking can feel terrifying to some..
That flutter in your stomach, the tightness in your throat, the voice in your head whispering, “What if I mess this up?” It’s a familiar experience for so many people, even the ones who appear calm on the outside.
But here’s what we rarely hear:
You don’t have to fight that fear.
You can meet it with kindness instead.
Speaking with confidence doesn’t come from pretending you’re fearless. It comes from creating a space inside yourself that says, “It’s okay to be nervous. I can still show up.”
So what does that gentle approach actually look like?
- Name it, don’t shame it: Instead of pushing anxiety away, acknowledge it. “I’m feeling nervous right now” is a powerful, grounding statement.
- Breathe like it matters: Before you speak, take one real, deep breath. Not to “calm down,” but to reconnect with yourself.
- Use self-talk that sounds like a friend: Replace “Don’t mess this up” with “You’ve prepared. You care. That’s enough.”
- Focus on service, not performance: Shift your attention from how you sound to how you want your message to help someone.
- Accept the wobbles: Even seasoned speakers get shaky sometimes. It’s not a flaw. It’s human.
Here’s the truth: people don’t remember whether your hands were trembling or if you stumbled on a word. They remember how you made them feel. They remember your honesty. Your intention. Your presence.
And when you offer yourself compassion in the moment, you open the door for connection. Real connection. Not in spite of the nerves, but because you dared to show up, nerves and all.
You are not a robot. You’re not expected to be perfect. You’re simply invited to speak, with heart, with care, and with enough self-kindness to take the next step.We help Leaders, CEOs and Managers craft their signature talk and share their message on stages.
