We’ve all sat through presentations filled with bullet points, jargon, and facts. And while information matters, it’s rarely what people remember.
What stays with us, what moves us, is a story.
A well-told story doesn’t just share information. It invites people into an experience. It makes your message personal. It creates connections.
And connection is where real impact begins.
So how do you craft a story that sticks?
- Start with a moment: You don’t need a dramatic plot twist. Sometimes the simplest stories, a tough conversation, a mistake, a quiet victory, are the ones that hit home. Choose something real.
- Let people see what you saw: Instead of saying, “It was a hard day,” try, “I stood in front of that room with my notes shaking in my hands.” Give them something they can picture.
- Share what changed: Every good story has a shift, something learned, something lost, something realized. That’s what gives it meaning.
- Keep it honest: Vulnerability isn’t weakness. It’s what helps your audience recognize themselves in your story.
- Tie it back to your message: Ask yourself, “Why am I telling this?” A story without purpose is just a memory. A story with purpose is a message that lingers.
When you tell a story, you’re not just delivering content, you’re creating an experience. You’re saying, “Here’s something I went through. Maybe it sounds familiar to you.”
And suddenly, you’re not speaking to someone. You’re speaking with them.
In a world full of noise, a genuine story cuts through. It softens the room. It invites people in. And sometimes, that story becomes the reason your message is remembered, long after the lights go out and the slides disappear.
So, the next time you prepare to speak, don’t just ask, “What do I want them to know?”
Ask: “What do I want them to feel?” Then tell them a story that gets them there.
